ArcelorMittal has been recognised for its sustainability leadership with a World Steel Association “Steelie” award at a ceremony held during the 49th worldsteel conference in Chicago on 12 October.
The company was honoured with the “Excellence in sustainability” award for its 10 Sustainable Development Outcomes – a key foundation for its new sustainability framework, which it outlined in its 2014 sustainability report.
ArcelorMittal saw off competition from China Steel Corporation for their development of an industrial park using by-product fuel gases and Tata Steel Europe for the certification of 19 construction products for responsible sourcing.
The award focuses on one specific sustainability initiative or programme that has made a positive impact, or provided benefits in all three areas of sustainability – including economic, environmental and social performance. ArcelorMittal’s nomination most closely met the judging criteria which included demonstrating to what extent the initiative impacted, or provided benefits for, the company and/or society in the three sustainability areas. Judges also assessed how widely the initiative was communicated to stakeholders and what level of community/stakeholder outreach related to the initiative. ArcelorMittal has been shortlisted each year since the award began in 2010, but only once before been awarded the Steelie for excellence in sustainability.
Speaking about the company’s sustainability outcomes Alan Knight, general manager, corporate responsibility, said “ArcelorMittal’s 10 Sustainable Development Outcomes were launched this year to provide a fresh approach to identifying the contribution the company – and wider steel industry – can make to a sustainable future in which steel plays a valuable contribution. The outcomes are supported by a sustainable development framework that describes the management steps the company will take to get there. We believe that through this framework, we will raise the profile of steel, and catalyse stakeholder interest in the contribution it has to make to a sustainable future. “
ArcelorMittal was shortlisted in four categories at the awards:
The World Steel Association’s Steelie awards, now in their sixth year, recognise member companies or individuals for their contribution to the steel industry over the past year in a series of categories impacting the steel industry. The Steelies are awarded at worldsteel’s annual conference each October. The first Steelie awards ceremony took place in 2010 at worldsteel-44 in Tokyo.
