18 April 2016 - ArcelorMittal Mining was recognised with a 2016 Global Risk Awards for its successful handling of the 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak in Liberia.
The ‘Excellence in the face of adversity’ award – presented by the Institute of Risk Management – recognises how ArcelorMittal was able to continue operating its iron ore mining and shipments without interruption throughout the outbreak of Ebola in Liberia, as well as the creation of the Ebola Private Sector Mobilisation Group (EPSMG) which was founded to coordinate and optimise the response by the private sector operating in West Africa to the outbreak of Ebola.
Commenting on the award, Simon Wandke, executive vice president, CEO ArcelorMittal Mining, said: "The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa was, without doubt, one of the toughest challenges we have ever had to face in West Africa, and this award goes to our employees for their dedication during this period.
We knew from an early stage that there must be other companies like us who wanted to help and take action. That is why we formed the EPSMG, as a hub for private sector companies operating in West Africa to come together. "
"We are delighted with the recognition the EPSMG continues to receive and focus on how this type of proactive response could be used during other global crises".
