How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined ArcelorMittal in 1992 as a research engineer, before moving to production, process, quality, customer support, and now continuous improvement.

Why steel?

My major was chemical engineering, then ceramic science and engineering, so I thought I was going to work for a chemical company. But I realised that the steel industry needs all kinds of engineers and technicians.

What are your main responsibilities?

I am in charge of continuous improvement of a segment which covers 19 plants. In this transversal function, I support plants to accelerate improvements and advance their methodology.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Knowing I can make things happen. I like to have a clear objective and move a situation from point A to point B.

What career support do you receive?

Working at ArcelorMittal means huge possibilities and the opportunity to take on different positions and leave your comfort zone.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

It’s manifold and inclusive – not only because of our geographical footprint, but also because of the wide range of customers we serve. All kinds of skills are needed and the learning is endless.

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

Why steel?

Back in 1997, during my first year studying engineering, I had the opportunity to experience the hot-rolling mill at Florange and I was so impressed that I decided to work with ArcelorMittal.

What are your main responsibilities?

For ArcelorMittal Europe Long Products, I am responsible for energy savings – mainly in terms of re-heating furnaces – as well as environment, CO2 management, by-products, and sustainability.

I am also chairman of the radioactivity committee with group-wide responsibilities.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The variety of projects and activities, as well as being part of a global company working across different languages and cultures.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

ArcelorMittal goes above and beyond to reach excellence. Its focus is on optimising at every level, and finding the best opportunities at any given time.

Sharon Asche
Division manager, external processing and logistics, Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor, USA

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I have been with ArcelorMittal since 2007.

What are your main responsibilities?

I am in supply chain management, with responsibility for external processing and logistics. Our group manages the external processors for ArcelorMittal USA.

For external logistics, we have responsibility for all outbound shipments from our mills and the processing network.

I am also responsible for the LMIC Railroad and Burnham Trucking, both of which are ArcelorMittal subsidiaries.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Every day is different. With supply chain touching so many different departments, I have the opportunity to work with different people from all areas.

Each day presents new challenges and it is exciting to be able to work through issues as they arise.

What kind of career support do you receive?

I am surrounded by different people and departments with extensive experience, which has helped me better understand the industry and mills.

I have also taken advantage of the training and development courses offered by ArcelorMittal, which have been beneficial for my personal development.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

It’s a company that welcomes new ideas and perspectives. I have found my ideas and input are valued by my peers.

The company also has a culture of opportunity. I have been allowed to be involved with several different functional areas, which has led to a better understanding of how my job affects the bigger picture.

Oliver Eugen Biliac
Mechanical engineer, ArcelorMittal Galati

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I started working in the Galati facility, in Romania, in 2001 after graduating from a five-year mechanical technology engineering programme.

What are your main responsibilities?

Initially, maintenance – I started as an equipment inspector when Galati implemented an inspection program across the entire plant. I then moved into an engineering position focused on reliability.

Currently, I am working as an expat for ArcelorMittal Jubail, Saudi Arabia, in the maintenance field.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I find my job very rewarding as I know my efforts to improve the reliability of our equipment assets are important and directly contribute to our goals around continuous improvement and cost saving.

The company provides me with challenging opportunities which allow me to grow and boost my skills, making my job more enriching and exciting.

What kind of career support do you receive?

I have had the opportunity to visit other ArcelorMittal facilities such as Indiana Harbor, Burns Harbor, Dofasco, Gent, and Kryvyi Rih to benchmark best practices and apply my new knowledge.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

The word “diversity” springs to mind. Leveraging the different ways of working between cultures – and having the ability to share and interact across ArcelorMittal facilities throughout the world – is a monumental advantage and something that will keep ArcelorMittal growing in a positive direction for years to come.

Lorraine Delorme

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I started in 2004 as a marketing analyst. Later, I moved into metallurgy, but my marketing background was very helpful in understanding our customer needs.

What brought about your interest in your field?

In high school we had the opportunity to be paired with a worker in our field of interest for one day. I met a technician in metallurgy and from that day I knew I would study metallurgy.

What are your main responsibilities?

I’m responsible for making sure our production team at the furnaces has everything they need to produce steel with the highest quality and productivity, along with working in a safe environment.

Every day we work hand-in-hand with the production employees and supervisors to achieve the best performance at the furnaces and the ladle furnaces.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Taking up a challenge such as producing a new steel grade for the first time, and working with people to achieve a better performance in areas such as reducing energy consumption at the electric arc furnace.

Every day is an adventure and you never really know what your day will look like.

What career support do you receive?

Developing talent is a real focus at ArcelorMittal. This opens many possibilities for enhancing your knowledge through the ArcelorMittal University or outside training.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

You have a lot of freedom to achieve your objectives, but the support is there to help you achieve your goals.

ArcelorMittal is a large family. You can easily share information with other employees in different plants that do the same job as you.

Juan Pablo Vargas
Production Manager, ArcelorMittal Costa Rica

What's your ArcelorMittal story?

I’ve been working in the steel industry for 13 years. I am a maintenance engineer and when I finished university I worked in the Costa Rica rolling mill, designing and implementing a preventive maintenance plan.

Since then, I have been in charge of the maintenance department, night shift production operation, production department – and now, managing the plant.

What are your daily responsibilities?

I’m in charge of all operations in the Costa Rica rolling mill.

Specifically, I have to check production and formulate an action plan to address problems and improve the KPIs with my team.

I define and follow up projects to achieve strategic goals, control costs and comply with the budget.

What learning opportunities do you have?

There are many opportunities – especially when it comes to areas I didn’t study at university, such as finance and sales.

I have completed some administrative and technical training at the ArcelorMittal University and it’s helped me a lot in my current position.

Why steel?

I love the rolling mill process! Despite the fact that I am young, I have a lot of technical experience in this process.

What do you enjoy the most at work?

Seeing good results after a project is completed. I like to talk with people and involve them in solving problems – and train them to increase their skills and leadership.

Juan Pablo Sambartolomeo
Technical manager, programming and production control, ArcelorMittal Acindar

What's your ArcelorMittal story?

I joined ArcelorMittal Acindar wire production back in 2002 and worked at the Buenos Aires wire plant as a process engineer and production area manager for almost five years.

Since then, I’ve taken different roles, including in product management, and I’m now a steel business production planning manager.

What are your daily responsibilities?

Daily responsibilities include managing and leading Acindar’s quality, process and planning teams to attain the best results in a safe, efficient and sustainable environment.

What skills are crucial to succeed in your job?

Holistic thinking, teamwork, empowerment, people engagement, boldness, proactivity, being adaptable to change, and perseverance.

What learning opportunities do you have?

Every day we have opportunities to learn and share new knowledge and skills. Benchmarking practices between plants, generic or specific training or mentoring programmes are just a few of the examples where ArcelorMittal employees can improve their skills.

Why ArcelorMittal Acindar?

It’s one of the biggest companies in Argentina and would probably be the top choice for every local engineer.

What do you enjoy the most at work?

The steel business is very dynamic – we are constantly adapting to market changes. This makes for everyday challenges. All of the people at Acindar share this feeling of constantly reinventing our business and this is what I especially enjoy.

Margaret Krolikowski
Division Manager, Quality, Cleveland Ohio

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I’ve worked at the Cleveland plant since 1986, and my roles have included product metallurgist for coated products, improvement engineer for the hot mill, and quality systems engineer for the finishing division.

I have been in my current job as quality manager for finishing since 2006.

What are your main responsibilities as a quality manager?

Providing customers with the right steel for their applications. This means looking at forming requirements as well as surface requirements to design the steel to meet expectations.

I am responsible for both the cold-roll and coated products at Cleveland. I am also deeply involved with new product development and the maintenance of the quality management system for finishing.

How has your role added to your specialist knowledge?

I have learned about the practical side of metallurgy. It’s one thing to learn something in a classroom about influencing the strength and formability of steel – but it’s exciting to be able to use your knowledge to actually change the properties of the steel that’s produced.

I take pride in seeing the steel produced in Cleveland used in cars and appliances and so much more. When you work in a steel mill, you see the world differently than other people do.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

The statement “Boldness changes everything” captures ArcelorMittal culture. People are encouraged to try new things, new ideas are supported – and people work to be the best in all they do.

Carlos Popp
Leader, tundish operations, Villa Constitución, Acindar, Argentina

What's your ArcelorMittal story?

I started as a shop-floor operator, then became lead operator for my shift. Over the last few years, I have taken part in training programmes and have recently been promoted to a position with the highest responsibilities at operational level.

What are your daily responsibilities?

Daily duties include making sure the tundish – a container for pouring molten metal into a mould – is ready to cast according to the production plan. To do this, I coordinate the tasks of other crane operators.

My responsibilities also include complying with all the health and safety, operations and environment rules.

What skills are crucial to succeed in your job?

Good communication skills, respect for my colleagues, and being able to coordinate tasks with them. You also need to be flexible and able to find the best solution for production, in terms of quality and safety.

What learning opportunities do you have?

I receive training and opportunities to work on different tasks, beyond my daily duties, with new challenges and learnings. I have been recognised for good job performance, and am being trained to take up additional responsibilities in the future.

Why steel?

My father worked in this company for 30 years until his retirement. I have always considered ArcelorMittal to be a great company, which allowed us to grow as a family during the whole time my father worked here.

What do you enjoy the most at work?

I receive a just and fair wage, but I also enjoy the work environment with colleagues, and benefits from the company, such as transport.

My job allows me to keep learning and keeps me connected to developments in other parts of the steel plant.

ArcelorMittal is a serious company that produces sustainable results. It has given me a job with growth opportunities. I initially joined for five months, and have so far stayed for eight years, having advanced my career in a variety of roles. And I want to go for more – I haven't finished learning yet.

Jolanta Malicka
Green officer, ArcelorMittal Poland

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined the company in 2010, having started on a six-month internship. From the beginning, I was trained for the green officer position.

Could you briefly describe your role as a green officer?

My role is about enhancing social dialogue on environmental preservation. It is my responsibility to quickly and effectively address any environmental issues that may arise from our business units.

I work with residents, local government, and NGOs to identify opportunities for the company to promote local environment preservation.

Why steel?

I studied environmental engineering at the University of Science and Technology in Kraków. The programme itself dedicated some study to the steel industry. Working in the dynamic environment of a steel and mining company showed me the importance of good management in organisations.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

No two projects are ever identical, which makes my work difficult but very interesting.

What kind of skills training or other career opportunities have you been given?

I started my internship while still at university, and the company supported my studies by allowing me to work part-time.

I also participated in ArcelorMittal Poland’s talent academy programme for young engineers in the company.

Thanks to the company’s support, I was also able to take on a postgraduate study in public relations.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

ArcelorMittal values ethics, human rights, and doing business in a socially-responsible way. I am proud that ArcelorMittal carries out many projects to help local communities and is sensitive to their needs.

What do you enjoy most about the company?

The opportunities for self-development – and the opportunity to meet people from different parts of the world. I have the chance to learn new skills, improve my existing skills, and I have the flexibility to move into different roles around the business.

I enjoy my job and am able to keep a good work-life balance.

Ebrahim Dadoo
Manager, blast furnaces, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined the company in 2006 after qualifying as a metallurgical engineer. For the first three and a half years, I worked at the blast furnaces as an engineer and later as a senior engineer responsible for cast house operations.

After a production manager role at the sinter plant, I moved back to the blast furnaces, as a production manager.

What is the role of the metallurgical team?

The metallurgical team focuses on selecting suitable input materials, process monitoring and optimisation, and capital and cost efficiency.

Why steel?

The steel industry is really challenging for metallurgists – it expands your thinking beyond your field of expertise. Due to the vast number of inputs, especially in a blast furnace, controlling the process is a daily challenge.

Steel may not come across as a glamorous industry. But it offers vast learning opportunities unrivalled by any other industry.

Any favourite projects?

A year after joining the company, I witnessed the reline of a furnace. To be part of such a team so early in my career added tremendously to my understanding and appreciation of the plant where I work.

How would you describe ArcelorMittal culture?

ArcelorMittal prides itself on encouraging teamwork. However, each individual is responsible for his/her own personal development.

Reinaldo Cartechini

What are your daily responsibilities?

I am in charge of equipment maintenance and ensuring all equipment is ready for production.

What learning opportunities do you receive?

The company provides us with regular opportunities for training, which allows me to improve day-by-day. I also enjoy teamwork, and find team discussions to be a great way to learn.

When it comes to new knowledge, I learn every single day of my life.

What career opportunities do you receive?

I have been given opportunities to develop, change direction, and take on new positions. The truth is that I would not change what I do, because I love what I do.

I have liked mechanics since I was a kid – my father owned a tractor and I enjoyed helping him to fix it. When the opportunity to join ArcelorMittal arose, I had no doubt about it. This company gives me stability and security. And that is what I needed in my career.

What do you enjoy the most at work?

I most enjoy seeing the results of a task done well. I also enjoy working with my colleagues who are like my family. We have shared many hours and years together.

How do you ensure a safe working environment?

Risks are always there, even if they’re hidden. The important thing is to respect the safety rules, to look after oneself, and to look after colleagues.

Patricia Suarez

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined ArcelorMittal in 2003, and since then I’ve had more than six positions in a variety of fields.

What are your main responsibilities?

I am in charge of purchasing seaborne iron ore and I manage some of the most important supplier key accounts in this area.

I also lead various other projects within the purchasing department, aimed at improving the performance of our company’s sourcing.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The intellectual stimulus of each day – the need to quickly and effectively manage and assimilate a great amount of information across different fields, from finance and strategy, to marketing and people management.

What kind of career support do you receive?

I had the chance to have a mentor, a sponsor, and to have access to specific training in management and finance as part of my development process. I believe few companies offer such a wide variety of professional development support.

Ana Escobedo

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined the company in 2008.

What are your main responsibilities?

Part of my responsibility involves working with our local government affairs managers who are responsible for liaising locally with their authorities.

I also interact with commercial coordination, marketing, and environment teams to build group positions on trade, environment, or any other subjects that need to be discussed and lobbied with governments around the world.

We do this to ensure that regulations and government decisions support the sustainable development of the steel industry.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The diversity of challenges the business must solve. You need to have the technical know-how before proposing a strategy on how to solve the issue. Each topic requires you to work with experts, define an action plan, and interact with different government officials to ensure the proposal is considered. It is a very interesting process.

What kind of career support do you receive?

When I first joined, I was assigned a mentor who has supported me through the different stages of my career development.

Training has been a great asset and the leadership programmes I have been part of have been amazing – not only because of the quality of the trainers, but also for the opportunity to interact with a great diversity of ArcelorMittal employees from around the world.

What’s special about ArcelorMittal?

At this company, I have had the opportunity to get involved in new roles and gain experience in completely different areas. It’s really rewarding to see your ideas taken into consideration. Knowing that people will listen to your proposals is an incentive to be bold and creative.

Dorian Dumitrescu
Internal and external communications manager, Galati, Romania

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I joined ArcelorMittal Galati in 2006. Before that, I worked as a journalist for around 20 years.

What are your main responsibilities as a communications manager?

For internal communications, I manage the tools for cascading information, such as internal news bulletins, the local intranet, and the company magazine for steel shop workers.

With external communications, I manage the relationship with local, national and international media for our business units in Romania.

Our aim is to be clear and consistent in communication with all stakeholders. My role also involves managing the company’s brand.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

This is a rare “you will never be bored” job, with many challenges and new experiences. It offers the excitement of working in a fast-paced environment to give timely, transparent information to all stakeholders.

Why steel?

Working in steel – an industry with environmental, social and market challenges – has helped me build a strong professional knowledge.

What kind of career support do you receive?

I have been given local training opportunities and participate in global conferences and workshops, which are very useful to me.

Larisa Harabula

How long have you been with ArcelorMittal?

I started my career at ArcelorMittal in 2007 – as an internal auditor in Romania, just after I graduated. In 2011, I moved to Luxembourg to corporate internal assurance, before moving onto my current position with the group treasury in Paris.

What brought about your interest in your field?

Working as internal auditor gives you the opportunity to learn about various processes across an entire company, so I was convinced it would be a very good start to my career – and I was right!

What are your main responsibilities?

I am in charge of the internal control function at Group Treasury, including communications with all relevant internal and external parties.

My main responsibilities include ensuring an effective internal control framework, monitoring compliance with policies and procedures and generally all Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and other regulatory requirements, and improving governance through effective controls.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

A new day at work means a new challenge, and new things to learn – I am never bored! My job has taught me about various processes – from steelmaking, to trading and risk management.

ArcelorMittal is a unique workplace that allows you to experience a breadth of different cultures and ways of working. We make up 20 different nationalities in the group treasury alone, and there are days when I am speaking three languages.

Ricardo Zamora

What’s your ArcelorMittal story?

I started my career in the quality control laboratory as a supervisor, before becoming a roll and guide shop supervisor to the laboratory in 2003. Five years later, I became a process department manager – a position I hold today.

Why steel?

From the moment I started my mechanical engineering studies at university I was very interested in materials – and steel in particular, as one of the most commonly-used materials in the world around us.

So when I had the opportunity to apply to work at the mill I didn’t have any doubts. I started working during my final semester at university and it was the best way to start my career.

What are your main responsibilities?

Ensuring quality and quantity controls are in place at the mill for all the guides and mill rolls to guarantee normal operations. I am responsible for the quality control laboratory where we define specifications for the raw material and test products to ensure we meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.

I am also responsible for the process area where we keep and improve all our “recipes” – technical documents with all the settings required in the mill to roll a specific product – and I help analyse, develop and implement new products at the mill.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The challenges! My job is never boring and every day brings new challenges – whether it’s developing new steel grades, improving processes, or addressing market difficulties.

We have a rule at the mill: that there is always something that can be improved. Working as a team, we can make improvements to everything from process, to safety and environment.

What career support do you receive?

ArcelorMittal is very oriented towards helping employees grow and it offers training that’s tailored towards your role and field. The company actively encourages you to visit different units of the company to exchange knowledge and experience.

The company also provides leadership training programmes to develop teams and help them tackle challenges together.

How would you describe life at ArcelorMittal?
