ArcelorMittal’s main production in Morocco is through Sonasid, the largest long steel producer in Morocco with facilities in Nador and Jorf Lasfar. Sonasid is a joint venture in which ArcelorMittal has a 50% stake. Its facilities consist of one electric arc furnace, one continuous caster, one wire rod and one bar mill. Sonasid produced 0.5 million tonnes of crude steel in 2014. Sonasid’s production is mainly sold to the domestic Moroccan construction market.
Health and safety is the number one priority of Sonasid, its employees and contractors, and we make particular efforts to establish a true safety culture. We have also made significant investments in technical solutions to save water, energy and raw materials. This includes for example, the continuous loading of scrap, water-processing, hot-charging of billets, and investing in alternative renewable energy sources. Sonasid is also active in supporting the local communities around its production sites. This involves regular engagement with the local NGOs and the communities near our plants. Community projects include the renovation of old peoples’ home, school buildings and support to local street children.
