R&D: Innovations in our energy processes
During 2014, our global R&D division worked on nine projects aimed at improving energy efficiency in our production processes. One of these has taken a holistic approach to all the variables that can affect the consumption of energy. The aim is to develop a model which simulates energy use and CO2e emissions for an entire integrated steel plant, and quantifies the effect of new improvements or changes to processes. In addition, a new process control scheme to cut energy usage in our heating furnaces was also developed, which could deliver reductions of between two and three per cent.
