Two CSR awards for ArcelorMittal from Mexican Centre for Philanthropy

19.11.2016

ArcelorMittal Mexico has been presented with two awards at the 11th international seminar on best practice in corporate social responsibility (CSR) held by the Mexican Centre for Philanthropy (Cemefi) in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.  The first recognised our capacity building project “Cultivando Futuros”, (Cultivating Futures), and our contribution to environmental protection through our “Turtle Camp” initiative.

"Cultivando Futuros" is a community development project in conjunction with ChildFund Mexico. The project was recognised in the cross-sector partnerships category. It works with communities in deprived areas to strengthen resilience and build capacity so they can improve their own environment. Our intention is to generate social, environmental and economic value in the communities in which ArcelorMittal Mexico operates, such as in the Municipality of Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacán.

The "Turtle Camp" project was recognised in the care and preservation of the environment category and acknowledges the our contribution to the sustainable development of the region. This project plays a significant role in winning the hearts and minds of locals more used to appreciating turtles for their meat and eggs than for being an important part of the region’s biodiversity. Turtle trafficking has also contributed to the decline of local turtle populations.

The Turtle Camp not only raises awareness of the importance of protecting the three species of sea turtles that arrive in Lazaro Cardenas, it also seeks to help as many baby turtles as possible be released back to the sea by organising opportunities for employees and their families to visit the camp on Saturdays during the turtles’ spawning and birthing seasons. The visitors attend awareness talks and then have an opportunity to release the new-borns into the sea.

ArcelorMittal Mexico has supported the project in practical ways too, including building appropriate facilities for camp activities. The “Turtle Camp" is regarded by many as having the best infrastructure of any similar project in the region. We also provide administrative assistance with regulatory procedures, technical support and even oversees the camp’s weekly, monthly and annual operations monitoring and results.

Through these projects, ArcelorMittal Mexico has demonstrated our  commitment to the sustainable development agenda in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacán. The awards show that society appreciates these efforts. ArcelorMittal Mexico acknowledges the work of all its employees and especially those who have actively participated in these important projects, since these awards were made possible thanks to their enthusiasm and commitment.

The corporate responsibility team and representatives from their strategic partner, ChildFund Mexico were on hand to accept the awards.
