ArcelorMittal is focused on achieving technological advancements in three key areas of innovation:

  • Products – A clear objective of our research efforts is the invention of steel products that advance more sustainable lifestyles: light weight solutions for cars of the future; unique products for structures and skyscrapers; high-speed rails; and plate steels for extreme weather conditions. All of these new products are meeting the current and emerging demands of our present and future customers.
  • Processes – While our ability to make new products is critical to maintaining our leadership position in a competitive market, the way in which we make those products is equally important. In fact, most of our successes follow a 'process driven product development' principle. Our process research team works closely with individuals across the business to address technological challenges and improve the reliability and efficiency of our processes, which thereby supports product innovation and allows us to make the best quality steel, at the most affordable price, with the least impact on the environment.
  • Product applications and solutions – ArcelorMittal aims to deliver similar breakthrough advances in its key markets by creating unique engineering solutions for customers. We are actively involved in designing applications that meet the complex and changing needs of two priority markets, automotive and construction, through the launch of S-in motion® and Steligence®.

S-in motion® is a catalogue of steel solutions developed by ArcelorMittal for automakers. S-in motion showcases the benefits of using advanced steel grades and manufacturing processes to create lighter yet safer vehicles and meet demanding fuel economy targets, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. S-in motion first launched in 2010 with steel solutions for a typical C-segment vehicle. Today, the S-in motion catalogue includes solutions for all types of vehicle parts and full vehicle platforms including mid-size sedans, SUVs, pick-up trucks and hybrid and electric vehicles. Many vehicles on the road today are inspired by the S-in motion® steel solutions developed by ArcelorMittal. Click here to read the full case study on S-in motion.
