The safety of our people is a fundamental priority for ArcelorMittal – and the first of our four values. We believe that zero fatalities and zero serious injuries are possible, and are intensifying efforts to make this a reality across the Company.

In 2024, a comprehensive Group-wide workplace safety audit was completed by dss+, a leading international provider of sustainable operations management consulting services. The audit, which took nine months had three main scopes:

  1. Fatality prevention standards for the three main occupational risks leading to serious injuries and fatalities (working at heights, vehicle driving and energy isolation)
  2. Process safety management focused on the highest risk assets
  3. In depth assessment of health and safety (H&S) systems, process and capabilities, governance and assurance processes, and data management.

The audit identified six key recommendations, which were published in October 2024.

  1. Improving the identification and understanding of operational risk exposure
  2. Strengthening the existing health & safety assurance model
  3. Continuing to embed safety values, mindsets and behaviours to strengthen the “one safety culture”
  4. Improving contractor safety management standards
  5. Adopting industry best practices for Process Safety Management (PSM)
  6. Integrating health & safety elements into supporting business processes.

These recommendations are now being implemented group-wide, and we believe they will provide a strong basis for transforming the Group’s safety performance. We reported on our progress to date in our recently published 2024 Sustainability Report.

In 2024, a group-wide health and safety communications campaign ‘Believe in Zero’ was launched to support our journey to zero fatalities and zero serious injuries. There are many ways to reach zero, but they all start with belief. If we do not believe zero is an achievable outcome, we will never reach it.

Belief is of course not enough by itself. It needs to be supported by rigour, hard work and commitment, every single day. The campaign therefore evolved this year to 'Making Zero Happen', with the focus shifting to the actions now needed by every single person at ArcelorMittal if we are to reach zero. The video below, produced for the group’s annual health and safety day on 29 April 2025, featured senior leaders from across our business discussing the actions we are taking and efforts underway group-wide to support our journey to zero.

One of our biggest challenges – and main outcomes from the dss+ audit – is the need to create and embed ‘one safety culture’ across the Group, so we have the same, consistent approach to managing health and safety at every ArcelorMittal site worldwide. Efforts to achieve this are starting at the top of the Company. Enhanced safety leadership training has been designed and is being rolled out to 85 CEOs and VPs. This training started in April 2025 and will provide a strong foundation for every segment, region and site across the Company. Watch the video below to hear more from our senior leaders about the critical importance of leadership in our safety journey, and what world-class safety leadership involves.
