Satbayev University and ArcelorMittal Gas Production (SUAMGas LLP) is the name of the joint venture company established to explore the use of methane reserves in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region.

The methane reserves, found in coal seams and mines, could be used to fuel gas power stations or vehicles, offering better environmental performance for both industry and transportation in the region. But most importantly, if successful, the initiative would minimize possible risks associated with methane released during coal extraction, providing industrial safety for miners, an important factor in the safe extraction of coal.

The joint venture also aims to improve the ecology of the Karaganda region and to train and educate personnel and improve IT and industrial safety. Expressing his thanks to ArcelorMittal Temirtau’s management, Satbayev University rector Iskander Beisembetov said: “I am confident that our cooperation will significantly increase the efficiency of the energy sector in the Karaganda region." The joint venture will help both sides to attract investment and minimise implementation risks.
