To make this possible, we have set clear sustainability outcomes, detailed in our online Integrated Annual Review. And we work with communities in the regions where we operate to build local skills and infrastructure for long-term development.

In 2016, we launched our Mining Sustainable Development policy which sets out the principles that define our approach to mining. It is designed to help us build on our focus on land and local relationships. And it reinforces our commitment that in the areas where we work, we should have a long-term presence and leave a sustainable legacy.

We also play a leading role in the wider movement towards establishing social and environmental standards for mining that stakeholders recognise and value. One example of this is our commitment to the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative at our mines in Canada, helping us to improve performance and provide independent customer assurance, and our commitment to IRMA.

For more details on our ambition to lead our industry on supply chain assurances – and our roles in other multi-stakeholder assurance programmes such as ResponsibleSteel™ and IRMA (Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance).– take a look at page 54 of our Integrated Annual Review.

ArcelorMittal Mining’s Sustainable Development Policy and commitment to TSM and IRMA are supported by our 10 sustainable development outcomes, which are linked to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability in action

These examples illustrate how our sustainability approach translates into concrete action around the world.
