Range, safety and cost. These are the three challenges that manufacturers must overcome so that consumers can easily make the shift to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

To be energy efficient, BEVs need to be light. Yet the vital battery packs at the heart of every BEV need strong protection to preserve their integrity and to shield passengers from leakage, fumes or fire. And the vehicles must be affordable, too.

Steel is helping manufacturers overcome all of these challenges as they roll out their e-mobility strategies. In ArcelorMittal’s most recent S-in motion® BEV study, battery packs made from advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) showed excellent resistance to severe loads, but at a weight that’s comparable with currently available designs – and at much lower cost.
