Shaping the world's tallest building

Completed in 2010, the Burj Khalifa set a new benchmark for architectural and engineering excellence. At 828 metres, it remains the tallest building on Earth.

High-strength HISTAR®​steel sections manufactured by ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg helped make the landmark structure possible, demonstrating the role of advanced steel solutions in shaping some of the world's most ambitious projects.

November 2010

From smarter steel to smarter automotive design

Launched in 2010, S-in motion®​demonstrated how advanced high-strength steels could help automakers build vehicles that were lighter, stronger and safer. By combining ArcelorMittal's steel expertise with advanced engineering, it challenged conventional thinking about vehicle design and accelerated the adoption of steel solutions that improve efficiency without compromising performance.

Building on this foundation, ArcelorMittal continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation. In 2025, we launched ArcelorMittal Multi Part Integration®​(MPI), a breakthrough manufacturing solution that combines multiple components into a single high-performance steel part, helping customers reduce complexity, cut costs and create the next generation of lighter, more sustainable vehicles.

2011

Powering the solar revolution

Launched in 2011, Magnelis®​transformed corrosion protection for steel used in demanding environments. Its breakthrough zinc-aluminium-magnesium coating provides exceptional durability, making it ideal for the support structures that underpin solar farms.

Today, Magnelis®​is used in major solar projects around the world, including Dubai's Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park – the world's largest single-site renewable energy project – helping accelerate the growth of clean energy while extending asset life and reducing maintenance needs.

September 2011

Reviving Liberia's mining industry

In 2011, ArcelorMittal restarted large-scale iron ore mining in Liberia, reviving an industry that had been dormant since the country's civil war years. Since then, we have invested billions of dollars in mining, rail, port and energy infrastructure, becoming the largest foreign investor in Liberia's post-war economy.

In 2025, we completed our $1.8 billion Phase II expansion project, centred around one of Africa's most advanced iron ore concentrators, increasing production capacity from 5 million to 20 million tonnes a year and helping secure the long-term future of mining in Liberia.

2012

Turning steel into art

Created for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the ArcelorMittal Orbit showcased the beauty, versatility and creativity of steel on the world stage. Designed by renowned artist Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, the landmark structure was selected through a design competition to create a lasting symbol for the Games and remains the UK's tallest sculpture today.

In 2016, it was enhanced with the addition of The Slide – designed by Carsten Höller in collaboration with Kapoor – the world's longest tunnel slide at 178 metres. More than a striking piece of public art, the Orbit marked the start of ArcelorMittal's relationship with the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, reflecting values that transcend sport: ambition, excellence, innovation and the power to inspire communities for generations.

2014

February 2014

Investing in the future of American steel

Acquired in 2014, Calvert has become a cornerstone of ArcelorMittal's North American business and one of the most advanced steelmaking facilities in the world. In 2025, we took full ownership of the site and commissioned a new electric arc furnace, adding 1.5 million tonnes of lower-carbon steelmaking capacity.

We are now investing a further $1.2 billion in electrical steels production to support the growth of electric vehicles and the energy transition. Today, Calvert is at the heart of our growth strategy in North America, helping deliver the innovative steels our customers need for the future.

Redefining vehicle architecture

Our position as the world's leading steel solutions provider to the automotive industry is built on continuous investment in research and development. A standout example came in 2018 with the launch of the world's first double door ring system, co-engineered with Honda for the Acura RDX.

Combining innovative steel grades, laser welding and advanced manufacturing techniques, the inner and outer door ring design delivered a lighter, stronger and safer vehicle structure.

The breakthrough earned ArcelorMittal Honda's prestigious Excellence in Innovation Award and became the first in a series of innovations that evolved into today's ArcelorMittal Multi Part Integration®​(MPI) solutions.

Rethinking how buildings are constructed

Launched in 2018, Steligence®​challenged conventional approaches to construction by promoting a more holistic way of designing buildings. Rather than treating individual elements in isolation, it brought architects, engineers and builders together to optimise performance across a building's entire lifecycle.

By combining advanced steel solutions with smarter design principles, Steligence®​demonstrated how buildings can be lighter, more flexible, faster to construct and easier to reuse at the end of their life. The initiative reinforced steel's role in creating more efficient, adaptable and sustainable buildings for the future.

2019

Growing with India's rise

The acquisition of Essar Steel in 2019 gave ArcelorMittal a foothold in India – the world's fastest-growing major steel market and one of the most exciting opportunities in our industry. Since then, we have transformed the Hazira operation, taking it to its 9 million tonne nameplate capacity and advancing a major expansion to 15 million tonnes.

We have also announced plans for a new greenfield steel plant in Andhra Pradesh, underlining our long-term confidence in India's future. Growth has been about more than volume. By bringing together the strengths of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, we have introduced advanced steel solutions to the Indian market, including new automotive grades and products such as Magnelis®. The result is a business that is helping raise the quality, capability and competitiveness of Indian steel manufacturing.

Reaching new heights in New York

When One Vanderbilt opened in 2020, it transformed the Manhattan skyline. Rising 1,401 feet above Grand Central Terminal, the landmark tower became one of New York City's tallest and most recognisable buildings, while its SUMMIT observation experience has since become one of the city's most popular attractions.

ArcelorMittal supplied the heavy steel plate used in the tower's construction. The advanced plate steel delivered the strength and reliability required for one of the most ambitious skyscrapers ever built, continuing ArcelorMittal's long tradition of contributing to iconic projects that define city skylines around the world.

Leading the low-carbon steel revolution

Launched in 2021, XCarb®​was the steel industry's first global low-carbon steel brand. It demonstrated our determination not just to participate in the industry's transition, but to lead it.

From pioneering low-carbon steel products including XCarb®​recycled and renewably produced and XCarb®​steel certificates to a dedicated innovation fund supporting breakthrough decarbonisation technologies, XCarb®​gave customers practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint while accelerating the journey towards net-zero steel.

Today, XCarb®​remains a powerful symbol of ArcelorMittal's pioneering spirit and our commitment to shaping the future of sustainable steelmaking.

Standing with Ukraine

When war came to Ukraine in 2022, it struck close to home. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has been part of our company for many years, and thousands of our colleagues call Ukraine home. Across the group our people asked what they could do to help. In addition to many local initiatives on the ground, we partnered with UNICEF on a global fundraising campaign, matching donations made by employees to support children and families affected by the conflict.

Colleagues across the world responded with extraordinary generosity, with over €5 million raised, demonstrating the strength of the ArcelorMittal community. Our thoughts, support and comradeship remain with our colleagues in Ukraine and with all those whose lives have been affected by the war.

Responding when it mattered most

In 2023, following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, ArcelorMittal donated $5 million to support emergency relief efforts. The funds were shared between the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), helping provide urgent humanitarian assistance to communities affected by one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history.

The donation reflected our commitment to standing with people and communities in times of crisis. By acting quickly and at scale, we helped support organisations delivering life-saving assistance where it was needed most. This initiative demonstrated a principle that continues to guide us today: when communities face extraordinary challenges, we have a responsibility to help.

From foundations to the final whistle

When Arena MRV opened in Belo Horizonte in 2023, ArcelorMittal steel was embedded throughout one of Brazil's most ambitious sporting venues. Built in Minas Gerais – a state where ArcelorMittal has deep industrial roots – the stadium incorporates our steel in its foundations, supporting structures, roof and grandstands. In total, around 12,000 tonnes of steel were used in the construction of the 46,000-seat arena.

As the stadium's official steel partner, ArcelorMittal contributed steel solutions from the earliest stages of construction and secured naming rights for the arena's VIP level, home to its executive boxes and lounges. The project reflects the role our steel continues to play in shaping major infrastructure and community landmarks across Brazil and around the world.

Showcasing the future of sustainable construction

Construction of ArcelorMittal's new global headquarters in Luxembourg began in 2023 with an ambitious goal: to create a landmark building that demonstrates the full potential of steel in modern construction. Designed by Wilmotte & Associés, the 21-storey tower is a flagship example of Steligence®, our approach to creating smarter, more sustainable and more adaptable buildings.

Built using thousands of tonnes of steel produced in Luxembourg, including XCarb®​recycled and renewably produced steel, the building has been designed to minimise its environmental footprint while maximising flexibility, wellbeing and architectural performance. Its striking exoskeleton structure showcases how steel can enable innovative, low-carbon design at scale.

More than a headquarters, the building is a statement of intent: demonstrating how the ideas behind Steligence®​can help shape the next generation of sustainable construction.

Putting our steel on the world's biggest stage

As an Official Partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we brought some of the event's most iconic symbols to life. From the Olympic and Paralympic torches carried by thousands of torchbearers, to the giant Olympic Rings suspended from the Eiffel Tower and the Paralympic Agitos displayed on the Arc de Triomphe, steel took centre stage before a global audience. Manufactured in France using low-carbon-emissions XCarb®​steel, these landmarks showcased the beauty, versatility and sustainability of steel.

Combining design, engineering and craftsmanship, they demonstrated how steel can inspire as well as perform. For ArcelorMittal, Paris 2024 was a unique opportunity to celebrate our material, our people and our expertise on one of the world's biggest stages. It was a moment of pride that showed how steel helps make the extraordinary possible.

2025

Investing in the energy transition

A new area of business for ArcelorMittal as we respond to the energy transition, our first renewable energy project, a 1GW solar and wind development in India integrated with pumped hydro storage, was among the first of its kind in the country. It provides AM/NS India with a reliable source of renewable electricity, helping reduce costs, strengthen energy security and lower carbon emissions.

A $0.7 billion investment, the project has reduced AM/NS India's emissions by around 1.5 million tonnes a year while supporting the company's ambition to meet all its electricity requirements from renewable sources over time. At the same time, the long-life nature of renewable assets provides ArcelorMittal with stable, attractive long-term returns. What started in India has grown into a broader strategy.

Today, we have 3.3GW of renewable energy projects commissioned or under development, creating value both for our steelmaking operations and supporting the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

A landmark investment in low-carbon steel

In 2026, we confirmed the construction of a new electric arc furnace in Dunkirk – at €1.3 billion, it is our largest-ever investment in Europe and will be the largest EAF in the Group. With an annual capacity of two million tonnes, it marks a major step in our decarbonisation journey and demonstrates our conviction that climate ambition and industrial competitiveness must go hand in hand.

Made possible by a long-term low-carbon electricity agreement with EDF and support from the French government's Energy Efficiency Certificates (CEE) scheme, the project shows how the right enabling conditions can unlock transformational investment. Once operational, the EAF will produce steel with significantly lower CO₂ emissions, helping shape the future of low-carbon steelmaking in Europe.

Helping shape an architectural masterpiece

More than 140 years after construction began, Barcelona's Sagrada Família remains one of the world's most remarkable building projects. In 2026, Industeel, an ArcelorMittal subsidiary, was selected to supply high-performance Duplex UR 2205 stainless steel plates for the basilica's Glory Façade, its tallest and most prominent façade.

Manufactured in Charleroi, Belgium, the steel is being used in structural connectors that secure the façade's stone panels, providing the strength, durability and corrosion resistance required for this iconic landmark.

Co-engineering the future of mobility

For decades, ArcelorMittal has worked side-by-side with automotive customers to develop the vehicles of tomorrow. Our partnership with Renault Group demonstrates the power of that collaboration. By bringing Usibor®​1500 XCarb®​recycled and renewably produced steel into the latest generation of Renault electric vehicles, we helped deliver lower-CO₂ solutions without compromising safety, performance or design flexibility.

The project highlights how co-engineering, advanced steel technology and close customer partnerships can accelerate the transition to cleaner mobility. Together, we are helping shape a future where electric vehicles are not only driven with lower emissions, but built with lower emissions too.

Twenty years of ArcelorMittal

Executive Chairman, Lakshmi Mittal, reflected on 20 years of ArcelorMittal and the future of steel in a special address to the World Steel Dynamics annual Global Steel Dynamics Forum 2026, held earlier in June in New York. Looking to the future, he added:

“There are plenty of reasons to remain optimistic and excited about the future. I have no doubt that we will continue to face plenty of challenges and unexpected events. But honestly, I can say that after 50 years in the steel industry, there is no place I would rather be."
