XCarb® is the brand that brings together all of our reduced, low-  and zero-carbon steel products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider sustainability initiatives and innovation projects, into one focused effort.

It reflects our determination to lead the industry in innovation and transition – backed by the scale and technological expertise required to make a meaningful impact.

XCarb®: towards net zero steel

Reaching net zero requires a fundamental transformation in steelmaking: advances in breakthrough technologies, wider access to clean energy, supportive policy, and the right economics. As we continue on this long term transition, we have already launched two key decarbonised steel solutions using optimised existing technologies:

  • XCarb® steel certificates

  • XCarb® recycled and renewably produced

These solutions enable our customers to act now, reducing their carbon footprint while supporting the shift toward more sustainable steelmaking.

XCarb® steel certificates

XCarb® steel certificates – specifically designed for our flat steel products – are environmental attribute certificates generated from CO₂ reductions achieved through decarbonisation projects in our blast furnace routes.

These reductions result from partially replacing coal with alternative reductants, as well as implementing innovative technologies such as hydrogen rich gas reinjection and circular carbon initiatives.

The certificates enable our customers to report an equivalent reduction in their Scope 3 emissions, in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, with verification provided by DNV GL.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced

Available across both flat and long products, XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel represents the next generation of low-carbon steelmaking.

Produced using high levels of recycled scrap in an Electric Arc Furnace powered exclusively by 100% renewable electricity, this solution delivers steel with a very low CO2 footprint, enabling our customers to reduce the global CO2 footprint of their projects, products, and finished goods.

The renewable electricity used is independently verified via a Guarantee of Origin, backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), ensuring transparency and traceability throughout the process.

XCarb® Innovation Fund

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® Innovation Fund is a strategic corporate initiative designed to accelerate the steel industry’s transition to net zero steelmaking.

Launched in 2021 as a core pillar of the broader XCarb® programme, the Fund identifies, invests in, and helps scale breakthrough technologies and early-stage companies developing transformative solutions for the future of steelmaking.

Since its inception, the Fund has committed US$200 million across 9 direct investments, targeting high-impact areas including renewable energy, long-duration energy storage, carbon recycling, green hydrogen, and iron ore electrolysis

Supporting the next generation of climate technology

Beyond equity investment, the Fund takes an active role in bringing innovations to market. Its accelerator programme, launched in 2022, provides climate tech start-ups with hands-on mentorship, technical guidance, and research support to help them develop and commercialise their technologies at scale.

The programme's inaugural winner, CHAR Technologies, received a US$5 million investment for its high-temperature pyrolysis process, which converts organic waste streams into valuable energy outputs. Building on this, the accelerator has since expanded its global reach including in 2023, a partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) that connected the programme with India's growing technology start-up ecosystem.
