Why is a steel company building a renewable energy business?
For ArcelorMittal, the answer is simple: to secure energy supplies, reduce emissions and create long-lasting benefits for our company and communities.
Renewable energy. Now built in.
We know the power of an integrated business model. This is why we own every step of the steelmaking process – from mines to mills to distribution hubs. Each link in the chain makes the others more resilient and valuable. Now we are extending this model into a new area: renewable energy.
It makes sense – because energy security is business security. Our steel plants need reliable, affordable power to stay competitive and sustainable. By developing our own renewable energy assets in strategic global locations, we are securing a stable supply of clean electricity, reducing exposure to volatile energy markets and cutting emissions at the source.
Yet integration is only part of the picture. Renewable energy is also an opportunity to create new value through complementary activities – benefitting our business in tangible ways while contributing to the sustainable energy transition.
These projects show how.
India: turbo-charging renewable ambitions
India has big plans for renewable energy generation: doubling capacity from 250GW in 2025 to 500GW by 2030. In just 18 months, we constructed and commissioned a massive 1GW hybrid solar-wind project in Andhra Pradesh – a major step towards this target. This $0.7 billion project is now supplying clean electricity to our Indian joint venture, the AM/NS India Hazira steel plant – one of the country’s largest steelmaking sites.
The project is a game changer. 1.7 million solar panels. 91 wind turbines. All spread across 3,100 acres. Generating 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours every year – enough to light up 10 million Indian homes and avoid 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. This is industrial decarbonisation on a whole new scale.
Brazil: multi-site momentum in solar and wind
Over in Brazil, we are doubling down. In Bahia, we are building a 200MW solar plant alongside a 554MW wind farm through a joint venture with Casa dos Ventos. In Minas Gerais, we have teamed up with Atlas Renewable Energy to develop a 265MW solar park. Once operational, we will own it in full.
Combined, these projects will meet 14% of ArcelorMittal Brazil’s electricity needs and significantly reduce our carbon footprint. This is all part of our ambition to be self-sufficient in energy and lead the charge toward low-carbon steelmaking.
Argentina: a national first for hybrid energy
In Argentina, our long steel business, Acindar, has commissioned the country’s first hybrid renewable energy park. Developed with Petroquímica Comodoro Rivadavia, the 130.5MW facility in San Luis combines wind and solar power to supply clean energy directly to Acindar’s steel operations.
And this is just the beginning. We now have a second project in development – a 180MW wind farm in Buenos Aires – reinforcing our commitment to energy independence and industrial decarbonisation in the region.
Generating energy. Powering progress.
Renewable energy is a growing strategic focus at ArcelorMittal – powering not only our plants but also our business. As Aditya Mittal, our CEO, puts it: “Investing in renewable energy generation is an exciting new business area for ArcelorMittal. It provides cost-effective clean energy security for our steelmaking operations and supports our decarbonisation objectives.”
We are not just adapting to the energy transition – we are actively shaping it. We believe wholeheartedly that heavy industry can be a force for good. And as our 2.3GW of renewable energy projects underway across three continents shows: we are deeply committed to leading the charge.
