ArcelorMittal today announces it has donated $5 million to support emergency humanitarian relief efforts underway in Turkey and Syria following the recent devastating earthquakes that struck both countries. The donation will be split equally between the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
The DEC is an umbrella group of 15 leading aid charities, that coordinates and launches collective appeals to raise funds to provide emergency aid and rapid relief to people caught up in disasters and humanitarian crises around the world. The DEC and their local partners are among the first responders providing urgent help. Their immediate priorities are search and rescue, shelter for those who have lost their homes, heating in safe spaces, blankets, warm clothes, and ensuring people have food and clean water.
Médecins Sans Frontières, which translates to ‘Doctors Without Borders’, provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. MSF’s teams are made up of tens of thousands of health professionals, logistic and administrative staff. Their actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of impartiality, independence and neutrality. MSF is a non-profit, self-governed, member-based organisation.
Commenting, Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal, said:
“The devastation in Turkey and Syria is heart-breaking. The donations to the DEC and MSF, organisations doing incredible work on the ground, we hope will make a small positive difference to helping the people of Turkey and Syria.”
