Multi Part Integration: next-generation vehicle assembly made simple

Across the automotive industry, the race is on: electrify fleets, cut emissions, strengthen safety and reduce costs – all at once.

For leading car makers, the complexity of manufacturing is one of the biggest barriers to achieving these goals.

This is where ArcelorMittal Multi Part Integration® (MPI) comes in. MPI is not a single technology – it is a smarter way of building the structures that make a vehicle. By integrating multiple components into one high-performance steel part, it creates stronger, lighter and more efficient architectures that support the next generation of mobility.

The power of integration

Traditional body-in-white design is a patchwork of parts, each requiring its own tooling, stamping and welding. MPI rewrites that playbook.

Laser-welded blanks allow engineers to combine multiple steel grades in a single part. Patented laser-ablation welding strengthens areas that absorb crash energy. Hot-stamping enables complex, ultra-high-strength shapes that were previously difficult or impossible to produce.

The result? Dramatically simplified assemblies that slash part counts and speed up production, while improving strength, safety and performance.

These are not innovations for their own sake – they are practical tools that help customers solve problems faster. MPI deployments have reduced spot welds by hundreds, enabled massive weight reductions and helped automakers adapt existing production lines for new vehicle generations.

Sustainability. Built in.

As automakers accelerate toward sustainable mobility, MPI helps them get there faster.

Integrated components require fewer processing steps, reducing energy use on the factory floor. Weight-optimised structures improve fuel economy and extend electric vehicle (EV) range. And when made with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, MPI contributes to meaningful emissions reductions before the vehicle even reaches the road.

Stronger welds. Safer cars.

Many solutions claim to cut complexity, but only ArcelorMittal’s MPI delivers both meaningful cost savings and uncompromised safety. The difference is our patented partial-ablation laser-welding technology, which creates exceptionally strong joints while keeping production efficient and affordable.

By removing only a thin strip of aluminium-silicon coating before welding, MPI prevents brittle joints and produces welds as strong as the underlying press-hardened steel – the benchmark for crash performance and repairability. Our Charpy testing validates this strength upfront, reducing reliance on costly full-vehicle tests and accelerating safe, confident design decisions.

Driving innovation around the world

One of MPI’s greatest strengths is its global scalability. ArcelorMittal’s worldwide network of steelmaking facilities, laser-welded-blank lines and advanced R&D centres means that customers can count on consistent quality and supply wherever they operate.

This global reach also speeds up innovation. A manufacturing insight from one region can help solve a design challenge in another, creating a continuous loop of learning and improvement across markets.

Co-engineered with customers

Every successful MPI project begins with a shared challenge. Automakers come with goals – improve crash performance, reduce mass, simplify assembly – and ArcelorMittal’s engineers work hand-in-hand to find the smartest solution.

This collaborative approach not only enhances the component – it strengthens the entire production ecosystem. Simplified structures reduce tooling needs. Fewer welds improve throughput. Lower complexity frees teams to focus on innovation rather than coordination.

MPI is a model that turns engineering partnership into tangible business results.

Fit for the future

As electric, hybrid and next-generation platforms evolve, integration will play an even bigger role in vehicle design. MPI is already supporting breakthrough architectures – from battery protection structures to cutting-edge EV platforms. Its inherent compatibility gives auto manufacturers the power to adapt across vehicle types and production lines – both existing and new.

Together with ArcelorMittal’s new steel grades and expanding global capabilities, MPI is set to drive the next wave of innovation across the automotive world.
