

Renault Group and ArcelorMittal bring lower-CO₂ steel to next-generation electric vehicles
Renault Group and ArcelorMittal are taking their partnership to the next level, bringing advanced steel solutions into series production for a new generation of electric vehicles.
Since September 2025, ArcelorMittal has been supplying its Usibor® 1500 XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for key structural components in several of Renault Group’s latest models, including Renault 5 E-Tech electric, Alpine A290 and Renault 4 E-Tech electric.

From concept to series production
What began as an innovation project has now become industrial reality. First introduced in the Renault Emblème concept car in early 2025, this next-generation steel solution has successfully moved into serial production. Today, it is used in five critical structural parts manufactured at Renault sites in Douai and Maubeuge, supporting the rollout of new electric platforms.
Combining performance with lower CO₂ emissions
The new steel solution delivers the same high level of performance expected for demanding structural applications, while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions linked to steel production.
Produced via a scrap-based electric arc furnace route using 75% scrap content and 100% renewable electricity for steelmaking, Usibor® 1500 XCarb® recycled and renewably produced offers almost 70% lower CO₂ emissions compared with conventional blast furnace production routes. This helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of the vehicle without compromising on safety or design flexibility.
High performance for modern vehicle design
Usibor® 1500 is already widely used in body structures thanks to its exceptional strength and reliability. It enables automakers to design lighter vehicles while maintaining high levels of passenger protection.
Produced using a hot-stamping process, the material combines formability with very high mechanical strength, making it well suited to complex structural components in electric vehicles. The XCarb® recycled and renewably produced version delivers the same proven performance as the conventional grade, supporting the transition to lower-emissions vehicle production.
Usibor® 1500 XCarb® recycled and renewably produced is a perfect example of how Renault Group combines safety, lightweighting and decarbonization to meet our sustainability and performance goals.
With the Renault 5 E-Tech electric, Alpine A290 and Renault 4 E-Tech electric, Renault Group is reinventing iconic models for a new electric era. These vehicles already emit no CO₂ in their use phase, and now with ArcelorMittal we are reducing the footprint of their production phase as well. Using Usibor® 1500 XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel shows how innovation and sustainability go hand-in-hand to create affordable, desirable, and more responsible mobility.
